The surfboard is most important piece of equipment that you'll need. Different boards will suit different conditions and different skill levels.
The surfboard leash is used to attach your board to your leg, ensuring that after falling off you don't have to go swimming back to the beach to retrieve your board.
Fins are attached to the bottom of the surfboard and help hold the board on the wave. There are two main types: removable and permanent glassed fins. We look at them in detail.
Surfboard wax is used to create traction on the deck of the surfboard. Find out how to apply it to the board and also how to remove it. We even have an article on how to make your own!
If you want to surf all year round and the water temperature is too cold for boardshorts, then you'll need a wetsuit.
Keep your board safe and ding-free while it's being stored or transported. There are three main types: a sock, a soft boardbag, and a hard case.
Boardshorts are the alternative wear for those lucky enough to be surfing in warmer water. Essentially these are made from lightweight, quick-drying material and have become a hot fashion item.
Deck grip is an alternative to applying surfboard wax. The grip has an adhesive back which is used to permanently attach it to the surfboard.
