Board Shorts - A Quick History
The first pairs of modern Boardshorts can be attributed to Australian surfers Alan Green and John Law (founders of Quiksilver), who made the first pairs in the late 1960's.
Boardies in Detail
Fly
Modern board shorts have a choice of two types of fly. A velcro fly (as pictured above) is the most common. Neoprene is also sometimes used as an alternative. This material can be stretched when required. Metal flys are not used due to the problem with rust!
Lining & Material
Boardshorts are made from a polyester or nylon and as such are quick drying and light. Boardshorts often do not have a lining like swimshorts and it is often preferred this way. This is not always the case so check for your preference before buying.
Tie Cord
Some shorts come with an elasticated waistband but we think you should ignore there. The best option is the tie cord for two reasons.
- You can secure your shorts to protect against a Jackson style wardrobe malfunction
- Rashguards often have a cord loop so you can attach your rashie to your boardies to prevent it from pulling up over you head
Stitching
Seams are often blindstiched or glued for added comfort. This minimises chafing when paddling around.
Pocket Holes
All boardshorts should have pocket holes for the obvious reason of water drainage. No point in carrying around pockets filled with water is there?
