surf paint question

i know theres thread about painting surfboards, but my questions a little more specific. i wanna paint my board and plan to do a gloss finish on it, but is that kind of finish as smooth as the fiberglass? cause it would suck to have a cool looking board but go out in the water and find that it doesn't ride as smoothly as it did before. any reponses from people with personal experience of riding self painted boards would be appreciated.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking but here's some info.
A gloss finish is achieved by adding a gloss coat of polyester resin and polishing it using a compound to acheive the shiny appearence.
If you're painting a finished surfboard the best thing to do is spray paint it and use a spray-on laquer sealent, but that won't give a shiny finish.

Spray-on lacquer should give you a gloss finish
Ive done this to a board (it was repair, rather than artwork, but I did spray it) and the lacquer coat is easily as smooth and glossy as a 'normally' finished board.

Only problem is the thickness of lacquer - this can cause a right headache if you tape off an area or spray it one section at a time. But as long as you bear that in mind, it'll be fine.

I've probably been using a different laquer because mine comes up as a matt finish, not gloss.
