Experience with bic shortboard?

Want to buy my first surfboard, after getting comfortable with the foam mini mals I've been hiring.

Wanted to know, has anybody had experience with the bic shortboard, my budget is thin (im talking about bic you should be able to tell). I just really need a cheap intermediate board that isnt like trying to turn a school bus.

Any other recommendations are appreciated, but the low cost is dragging me towards the bic

I can't remember what size the BIC shortboard is (I think it's 6'7), but for what it's worth, I don't really like the way it rides. I did ride a BIC surf betty board which I think was 6'3ish though, which I thought was an absolute delight of a board.

As you can imagine I also looked spectacular on the beach too.

I found a nsp elements fish 7’2 second hand, i know its alot bigger then recommended for my weight (70kg) but would you consider this a good board to progress from a mini mal? Hes asking £300 which doesnt sound too unreasonable provided no dings or holes

I surf around cornwall and devon btw so anything from ankle hight whitewash to around head hight

Wait, you previously bought a reverse-rockered 7'3" BIC before, so you've owned a BIC before.

Or do you mean your first "NEW" board, and not used ??

Too big ? I think it's too small. ( that's unless you are already doing turns going backside )

Regarding the previously owned bic, it was unanimously decided that it was useless to try and progress on with that profile, i wasn't the one that bought it it got handed down from a family member
(Who has since got plenty of stick for being that dull)

So I have been using medium 7 foot foamies that ive hired and am looking for a board to progress on as i find these easy to surf but difficult to turn, and the fish has alot of volume so i thought it would be an ok choice, opinion greatly appreciated

I own the 6'4" NSP Fish. It's my go to board here if I'm going to a beach break or if my longboard won't fit in my friends car.

You probably don't realize but soft, sponge boards gives a false sense of float and stability. With it's full boxy rails the float is more akin to a 8 foot hard board.

Right so I should be looking for something either 8 foot or high side of 7 for a hard board, seems sensible choice to me. The problem is im on a shoestring budget (uni) so my choices are very limited in terms of hard boards, thanks for your advice though, saved me alot of trouble

Something around 8ft is about right, longer is fine; try to stay longer than 7'6.

A second hand board is the best option if you can find one - coming up to spring/summer they may be in short supply, although perhaps some people have traded up and are selling their old ones.

Torq makes some ok boards (not super cheap but at the cheap end of middle). Cortez are ok for beginner boards and you can sometimes find packages (eg board, bag etc)
