Having now ridden both Carver C7 and Swelltech Surfskate, both are great boards but the Carver feels more like a hybrid between a regular skateboard and a really dedicated surf trainer board (Swelltech), so it depends on what you are looking for. When you first step on a Swelltech the looseness is quite surprising/intimidating, but once you start learning how to compress and put your weight into turns it really feels amazing (Swelltech has some good Youtube tutorial vids to get you started.) I haven't tried Smoothstar, but I love the Swelltech.

The only caveats I would give for the board are 1.) it is very loose with a lot of tilt so it may not be for everybody (kind of like shortboard vs. midsize/longboards), and 2.) it's not a good commuter board. You can't cheat-wiggle with just your legs to pump like the Carver, you have to use your upper body and it takes more effort. I can push off on it, but it's not something I'd want to do for long distances due to the front truck design (my understanding is that it is stable at speed though.)
