If I will be carrying the board on the roof of my car, would I need a bag?

You are not compelled to buy a bag, but if you paid good money for a board and you don't want a wax job on the roof of your car then the answer stands out

Some bags also offer some protection from bumps and so forth by having a layer of foam. If you dont have a bag (or even if you do), have a look into putting some padding between the board and the roof rack - you can buy specialist roof rack pads or just shove some rubber or even a towel in there.

Most boards are fine for the roof, but some boards - invariably short 'performance' boards - can have very light glassing and are quite soft. If you tie them down wrongly you can end up with big notches in the rails. But, as mentioned, a board with good glassing (or an expoxy) will generally have no problems.

Yeah and most padded bags are covered with reflective material to minimize board heating by the sun's electromagnetic waves (i.e., radiation). These padded bags also minimize damage when there is inadvertent contact with debris. This can be especially valuable at speed.

a "day use" board bag with 5mm of foam and reflective coat is perfect....prevent dings and melting wax.
You can also tighten belts on roof racks without problems

I have used a 'board sock for twenty years with my roof-rack with no worries. Cheap, easy to wash and comes in handy as a sleeping bag for those unexpected sleepovers!

there ok just no protection compared to the big bags but what ever suits i suppose and if you can double up as a sleeping bag even better lol

Ah good point . . . board sock for roof-racks . . . board bag for aeroplanes and vans and boats and stuff where the board may be 'touched' by others than you during transport. Cool.

a board bag is handy for a bit of security and keeps the inside of the car fairly clean when you want to lock the board away an go for a pint etc i got a great 8'6" bag for £26 on the net. comes in real handy.
