Originally designed for surfing, boardies are now the essential fashion, beach and watersports wear. There is nothing like surfing in them... if the water is warm enough. We have loads of brands to choose from and detailed information below to help you choose a pair that suit.
The first pairs of modern boardshorts can be attributed to Australian surfers Alan Green and John Law (founders of Quiksilver), who made the first pairs in the late 1960's.
Modern board shorts have a choice of two types of fly. A velcro fly (as pictured above) is the most common. Neoprene is also sometimes used as an alternative. This material can be stretched when required. Metal flys are not used due to the problem with rust!
Lining & Material
Boardshorts are made from a polyester or nylon and as such are quick drying and light. Boardshorts often do not have a lining like swimshorts and it is often preferred this way. This is not always the case so check for your preference before buying.
Some come with an elasticated waistband but we think you should ignore there. The best option is the tie cord for two reasons.
Seams are often blindstiched or glued for added comfort. This minimises chafing when paddling around.
Pocket holes for the obvious reason of water drainage. No point in carrying around pockets filled with water is there?
