Onwards from river Surfing

Postby jaffa1949 » Sat Nov 30, 2019 1:28 pm

Just one photo from the excavations and concrete work on the Traun river in Austria to make the biggest yet, man made river wave.
After many approval processes it is under way the wave will be 10 metres wide and produce a wave twometres high on Maximum setting, totally green based on the river flow and no pumps or tank release systems.

IMG_9771.jpeg

the next photo gives you an idea of the shape of the wave bed and how far they have dug down to the bedrock beside the river.

When you say ‘maximum setting’, will there be some form of control over the wave or is that just based on estimated maximum river flow?

Ability to set up the wave, one for clients and to adjust to river flow!
Since you are in Oz I have an article in Pacific Longboarder about river surfing in th 100th issue in the Buzz section.
My photos as well.
As Molly would say, “ do yourself a favour”

The river set up sounds interesting

And your (debut?) into the surfing print media is fantastic - I'll have to grab a copy (although for some reason I've allowed myself to be convinced to travel to the US over Christmas, just when I've escaped the cold weather I'm heading back into it). But I can order a copy online so will do so

Thanks for compliment, had a few articles before, one in an early White Horses, An article in the first issue of a US magazine Soaked.

I perpetuated a major hoax in a Kiwi forum about retired cashed up surfers traveling on cruise ships around the New Zealand coast anchoring offshore and ferrying them to the best breaks by zodiacs and PWCs , resident rock band and local guides.
Caused enough ruckus to make them want to set the ABs on me!
The cruise ship idea was done from the US to Mexico some years back.
Some minor surf star names as companion guides. There are name and music star cruises on small charters to the Mentawais .
Some of the surf stars I know would be wave hogs.

Hope you enjoy the article! :D

When will it open for surfing?
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

This is sort of ironic, it has been raining a lot in Austria and the river flows well enough that the original nature provided river wave is working.

The construction for the wave is in the foreground and will generate up to two metre face.
You can see the concrete lay up for the hydraulic rams and the guys for a view of scale

The guy surfing is the guy who is making the whole new wave, probably the wave will be up,to three times as large without the lumpy bits downstream.

Now the upwards section about “The Wave” which is going to be the the biggest river wave in Europe, these photos are of the adjustable wave making gate that can be hydraulically moved to give up to two meter faces on a a wave 10 meters wide.
Kindly with permission from Max Neuböck , imagine having this as your project and for your birthday present.

Max and his family are really producing this wave, lots of research around the world to produce it.

Next hopefully ride reports

The Traun is very low at the moment all the water is up above the snow line, we had our first slight snow at home and we are at 550metres.

I am not full aware of all the pl anging but I believe the design accommodates low flows in the river, I reckon it costs too much to build to neglect the prime surfing season , and I think there will be no “ you should have been here yesterday” escape clause.
But I have been given some good news, since I don’t have to paddle onto waves, my mid length options will fit on the size of wave planned :D

The construction is below the head entrance to water course and hydraulics drive a gate shown earlier in the tread to different configurations.
Gives different waves.
See pictures below.

As you can see there is substantial fall , wave power up to 2 metres.

You can see the side gap for the hydraulics in the side walls and where the wave shaper will be.

Well we have had very little snow unusually warm temperatures so melt time too combined with a weeks rain that should have been snow.
The wave has gone to official “ you should have been here yesterday” mode and been inundated.

I guess building progress is a little stopped at the moment!
