The best time for me is when I have the time. Last weekend on of the surfers at the beach when I was going out said it was desperation surf but to me I could see fun walls to ride. This weekend was more like desperation surf but there were some beginners having fun and cheering for me on a crappy wave I rode. I got my exercise and got wet. I think the surfer who commented last weekend would have called it flat this weekend but there were still waves to ride. Of course if it is like Bomans break then it's time to paddle around and get some exercise and forget about surfing.

Doesn't this depend on the break? Where I go, mid tide is the best. I love to surf at sunset when the sky is on fire.

Yes it does depend on the break and on the surfer and on the surfboard. I missed so much in learning to surf. I never felt like a lost kid at a county fair. It was a bit of trial and error at first but I quickly figured out what worked.

Two breaks I surf in particular are on opposite sides of the same headland....one works better at mid to high, the other at mid to low.....when I can't decide where to go I head over there and chance one then go to the other if the first isn't good.

I remember first starting and I would often be alone or nearly so in the water wherever I went. As I started to learn about tides I gradually started to see more people then noticed I'd see the same faces when the waves were really good....that's when it clicked and I started making notes for each break....the more familiar faces the better I was reading the conditions.
