Sounds awesome. My wife and I just got back from another trip to Tamarindo last week. Great times, except for the stomach bug I got from food or water??? Just a piece of advice I have heard a couple times since being back...take a pepto bismal chewable tablet everyday in the morning and your stomach should be clear of the bugs...since returning, I have heard this a couple times...nonetheless, have a great time! I guess though if you are going to be down there for 20 weeks that would be a lot of Pepto! : )

We're just over half way through the trip now, currently in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica - which seems to have perfect surf for our ability so we've spent the last 3 weeks here.
Nicaragua was great to travel in, a lot of culture and very cheap, especially if you eat at local restaurants (which we preferred to do). The chicken buses are so cheap and they run pretty efficiently on time, although they can be chaotic. One bus we took must have had 80+ people on; seats full, isle full and people sitting on top of the bus, we were sandwiched at the back where you couldn't physically move, not the comfiest journey but quite an experience! Taking surfboards on longer journeys we found shuttles work the best (group taxi mini buses usually organised by hostels). Taxis are good for short distances and for harder to access areas.
Surf wise we found Nicaragua in general quite challenging. These are the spots we surfed: Jiquilillo, Las Penitas, Miramar (Pipes), Amarillo, Maderas. Las Penitas was by far the easiest wave to surf, even when it was head and 1/2 it was still a long drop with plenty of wall to work with but the wave was pretty mushy with smaller swell and unsurfable on high tide accept on big swells. The other spots were fast pitching waves often hollow, Maderas and Jiquilillo were less challenging than Pipes and Amarillo.
If you're a good surfer you could get some really epic waves in Nicaragua, but we struggled when the waves were faster and hollow. Travel wise its a great place that I would recommend, if any one is thinking of going get in touch and I can recommend hostels.
