New surfer girl in Gold Coast

I been a couple years since I've got back into the water to surf properly.

Before I was surfing mostly up in Kaitaia, north of Auckland, in New Zealand and was catching some really nice green waves there (especially
with fish swimming in the surf). Locals there are so friendly and laid-back.

Now I'm based in Gold Coast, Australia and I'm starting all over again~

I started off with a 7'6 mal but have since switched to a 7'2 funboard. I can paddle out to the back several times with no problems and occasionally ride a green wave but I'm sticking mostly to the white-wash to pop-up and practice turning to boost up my confidence levels.

I'm lucky I have a more experienced surfer buddy here. It's nice to get tips and know there's someone looking out for me. A big thank you to all those other surfers out on the water looking after novice friends like me.

I've heard about the surf rage that happens in Gold Coast but the local surfers I've been out in the water with have been nothing but chilled-out and pleasant. I think it's important to know and practice the surf etiquette, respect the locals, and you'll get the respect back. =)

Hey Kowhai,
Welcome to SW :D

Where are you on the Coast? I'm at Currumbin - great surf there today 8)

As for surf rage, it can get a bit hectic out at the line up at Snapper or on really good days anywhere, but most of the time it's really relaxed - really good vibe in the small surf at the alley this evening with everyone having a chat 8)

Hey thanks drowningbitbybit,

I live North, near Main Beach, but I surf mostly down at Miami.

I loved Snapper's waves but yeah, there's a fair amount of people always there, and at my level right now, I'd be forever waiting for a wave at the line-up so I hardly ever go.

Do you prefer Cabarita or Kingscliff? Can't decide which to visit for a day trip =)

At the beachie?
I always intend to surf different breaks along the coast, but then the alley is 2 minutes from my house and it's one of my favourite spots, so I almost always end up there

I don't know either of them very well (I only moved to GC 4 months ago from Sydney), but I was at Cabarita this week and its a serious break with a very talented crowd - not sure I'd be comfortable there other than on a small day or during the week when the crowd is a bit less intense. Kingscliff is much simpler - not as good a wave, but loads of room and a good choice of peaks. 8)

Tiny waves this weekend!
