Hitachi planer

Would this work for shaping boards. It seems pretty cheap so I might get it.

Yeah looks like it will work, but personally I only use the planer to take away thickness, remove the crust, and put in vee's and concaves. Rail bands are done by a surform and then the fred for the bottom edge and then sandpaper.

Hitachi makes great tools. I have a couple and they have worked flawlessly for me over the last 10 years. Never tried to mow foam with one but I am sure it would work great. If you get it, take the blades in to get sharpened right away, you never know what the previous owner was using it for.

You can pretty much use any planer but i find the important thing is the throw on the depth adjustment. You want one which you don't have to keep turning and turning to get full adjustment. You want to be able to get full adjusment with one twist of the knob.

It's new so I don't think it should have any bad parts or anything like that. Is this a good price for it?

Yes there's a very important reason for this.
Basically to adjust the rockers on your board u need to vary the depth of cut of the planer as you run the planer along the length of the board. When im putting in a rocker i am constantly adjusting the depth of cut. It's much easier to do this with a single twist of the knob than it is with twist after twist after twist.
If you look at the skill 100 planer the planer that all the top shapers want/have you will see that the depth adjustment is done with a lever that you can flick from fully closed to fully open with just the flick of your thumb. This is ideal.
