beginners board?

hey
i was just wandering if anyone can help me. i've recently been to a surf school and had a few lessons. now i quite fancy a board of my own. the problem is i'm not sure what i should get. i'm about 5ft and i weigh around 7 stone. i don't want to spend too much on one as i wont be surfing too often, just a couple of times a year as i don't live near the sea. i want to make sure i've got the right board, right size, type etc. the only type i've surfed on are those swell ones you get in the surf schools.

Hi, welcome to the forum beth, I'm really glad you're enjoying surfing!

Seeing as you don't want to spend too much, and don't live near the sea, I would probably suggest you taking a look at a bic minimal, i think they do a 7'3, which would be fine for you as you are so small and light! Bic boards are cheaper, don't ding (chip or get holes in / damaged) so easily which will work for you seeing as you will be transporting it around a lot. I think you could get one of these for about £200, perhaps less if you look on ebay or somewhere.

If you wanted a custom board, you could perhaps get a second hand one, probably 7'3 or 7'4 again, a minimal. But if you do go to buy a second hand one take someone with you to look at it that knows about boards to check it over for you.

Hey there, am in the same beginners boat as beth, weigh about 8.5 stones and am 5ft 3 in height. Would I get away with a 7 ft 6 board? Want to be able to carry the thing! Saw a good deal on the internet for a "sunride" minimal board. Has anyone heard of them? Just wondering about durability. About the same price as a bic and meant to be a bit lighter. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Chembot, you're light and small too... i think 7'6 would probably be quite bulky, you're smaller than I am and sometimes my 7'2 really annoys me to carry...granted I don't have to carry it very far! :wink:

Never heard of sunride... is there a link you can put on so we can take a look at the board?

Hey guys, welcome to the baord

Definitely have to echo iomarti - as a small and fairly puny person it can be a right struggle with a big fat board!! I've got a 7'2" mini-mal which I love to bits, and its easy to carry - lighter than a bic. Only downside is more expense....

no thier not really heavy. And bic is better because its very strong.

Hey Bethy, was wondering if you ever got that bic 7 ft 3 . How did you get on? Want to buy mine soon but surfing aquaintances trying to convince me to buy a 7 ft9 or even longer, saying I'll be really frustrated with the 7 ft 3'!

i didnt get that one, instead i got a nsp 7ft 2. i havent had the chance to use it yet coz it only came last week but i think im off on saturday and ill let you know how i find it. butt i was at cayton bay last week before it came just to check teh beach out and stuff and i saw loads of people usinf the bic 7 ft 3 so it must b good

No, its surprisingly light! but i've yet to carry it down the steep path to cayton bay on saturday lol

it was £264 but it also came with fins, leash, boardbag, wax, wax remover thingy, etc

Yep, thats the same board I got... Think it's the same price too. The NSP 7"2 minimal. I love mine like a fat kid loves a mountain of cake covered in chocalate sprinkles and doughnuts.
