cracked rail repair

hi,

i've got a few cracks on the rail of my board that need attention.
I've got a repair kit, but the instructions in the kit tell me to use a sheet of cloth over the ding. this makes sense for bigger dings... mines just a crack/very small dings that not water-tight.

can i just mix up the resin and then apply a coat over the cracks and small dings to seal the board, as a permanent repair job?

Yes, that should work depending on how deep the cracks are. Sand the area down good before applying the resin. If the cracks are deep, it is best to sand them down and use a light 2 oz cloth to make sure they are sealed. If you do not use cloth keep an eye on the repair to make sure the cracks do not take in any water.

ah great thanks. i'm pretty sure the board took on water, so i've opened the cracks up to help dry the board up... will i need cloth to repair these holes? they arn't very big and only just reach the foam of the board.

I'd use a bit of cloth anyway as rails tend to take the brunt of any impacts, and more of their fair share of them. All my self repairs look pretty nasty, but they all last. Pretty lazy when it comes to sanding.

i wont take risk if my board got cracks. instead of diy, i will contact the board repair store. bcoz my board is everything for me. so i won't take any risks

Yup, you can do that just apply that mixture over the cracks it will be fixed.

Yup, you can do that just apply that mixture over the cracks it will be fixed.

I wonder how many boards Lewis has had in the twelve years since he posted.

If your board is worth something it is worth repairing properly, poor repairs without glassing break down quickly, hardly permanent. IMO poor value

resin by itself will seal a surfboard but there is a reason they don't just resin over the foam to make a surfboard and that reason is any little bump will crack the resin resulting in water leaking in. The fiberglass adds much greater strength to the repair.

My nicer boards and eps core boards I get fixed at the shop; cheap as chips here. For little hairlines and chips I use this stuff if I don’t mind the aesthetics. Sands smooth and holds up for years, but it has to be small, width of a thumbnail or less. None of my boards are showpieces and all were secondhand or more when I got them so I don’t care too much about looking good at the curb. This stuff can harden enough in 10min with some sun to keep a session going too.

For small cracks, I skipped the cloth and just applied the resin directly. Worked like a charm, and it's holding up well.
