Wax Removal

It’s been a while since I’ve removed wax from a board to start over with a clean slate. Before, I would just leave it out in the sun for a little while. Then I’d run a credit card to scrape off as much as I can. They used to have this stuff called “Fire Water” that would completely remove any residue left over. Aside from any pressure dings, the board was as good as new after that.

Now, I really would prefer not leaving my board in the sun. I’m also not sure if Fire Water still exists ... I don’t remember seeing it in any of the local shops.

I used Goo Gone (citric based – used for vehicle applications so as not to damage the clear coat) to remove some left over adhesive when I first bought the board. Worked great but worried that it might be bad for the glass?

What do you guys do? Is there some homemade concoction out there?

leave in sun for a couple of minutes then use something flat and plastic to scrape wax off. Then i just take kerosene and lightly go over. Makes the board look like new. Then a bit of windex

Just a question for you. I really don't know the answer and I am not trying to be a smart a$$.

I do the sun thing too. A couple of minutes in the sun and the old was comes right off. Is it really that important to get every bit of old wax off before putting on a base coat and new wax? I get off all I can by scraping with a plastic putty knife but you can still see a little sheen of wax when I am done.

I would imagine that even a thin layer of old wax would negate the benefit of the base coat since effectively your base coat is clinging to regular wax coat. Granted, I never used base coat before. Just slapped on the sticky bumps or mrs palmers cool wax. Then again, I do remember the wax constantly coming off where I sat. So I guess the base coat does help since I am not havint that problem at all now.

So everyone is still doing the sun thing, huh? I'd just hate for my board to get more than sun that it needs to ... it's so nice and white right now.

Kerosene??? And that shouldn't harm the glass?

Could you not put ur board on ur shower and wash the wax off with hot water???

I use white spirit to remove old wax, works a treat and does NO harm to your stick

my buddy is having trouble with his epoxy surftech. seems to be to slippery to keep the stuff from sliding. I told him to hit it with some 220 grit sand paper...should fix that.

Not so important i just do it when im changing the wax from season. Or to fix a ding or something otherwise i generaly just use the sun but if you wanted everything gone kerosene is magical

Might be a bit out of date, but if you don't want to use the sun use a blow drier, its doesn't look like it's work but as soon as you touch it the wax goes to mooosh, you can also work it off in parts, works for me.

You definitely can and your Plumber will love you when the wax goes down and clogs the pipes $$$$$$£££££££££££.
I use the sun lightly and hot water outside on a bunch of weeds I want to kill
Stupid answer when you consider the language of A hair dryer is cool too!
You can recycle your wax too. Just be careful melting it on your stove or whatever FIREHAZARD guess it all depends on how tight you want to be!
