Epoxy, Fiberglass?

Postby Kevster89 » Tue Apr 01, 2008 12:30 am

Are epoxy and fiberglass the main types of board material?

Is that what they are essentially?? Board materials?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

Are there any other kinds of material besides epoxy and fiber?

Somewhat.

Yes.

You could write a book.

Yes.

Now for the long form answer.

The epoxy and fiberglass materials are used to coat a foam inner core. They are like the shell part of an egg. Epoxy is a bit more ding resistant, lighter and some say more maneuverable. Fiberglass is heavier, a bit more stable due to the weight, has more of the classic surfboard feel, if that makes any sense to you. I personally think it's harder to ride a fiberglass board skillfully than an epoxy board because of the additional weight. Some will disagree I am certain. I prefer a fiberglass board myself, but I'm pretty old, old skool. Surfboards are also made of several kinds of wood and "Welcome to the 21st Century!" carbon fiber materials.

Not to forget though, epoxy is fiberglass, it just refers to epoxy resin vs. polyester resin.
