First Board for five Year Old? (Posted by surferdad)

First Post - Thanks for having me. My five year old daughter has extremely good balance and can surf my longboard to the beach on almost every try. She wants her own board now. Any suggestions? She is 47 inches tall and 52 lbs. You can see her at seagypsysphotographs.com. She is the featured surfer. She wants to do everything herself without daddy's help. We are on the Texas Coast so the wave size isnt the biggest. Especially in the summer

I can't recommend a specific size, but make sure to try it out in the store, see how she is able to handle it, carry it. Some surf shops have boards made specifically for groms, so check them out.

I know they're far from performance orientated, but would a foam board be a safe bet - I'm not sure if they do short boards though. It would be a whole lot less painful if she wiped out on one of them -I got a right bruise on my rear from falling on a Bic...Ooooh!

Your best bet would probably be to pop into some local surf shops, they're generally more than happy to help out, and as she seems to be a pretty good surfer anyway (sounds better than me!!) might advise something like a shortboard.

Oh, and I bet its the most fantastic thing in the world surfing with your little girl! What a cool dad you are!

My kids have been surfing since ther were 3. Started out on my boards 7ft fat boy at the time as i recall.

First grom board at seven was a 5'8, the buggers skint you.

I was thinking about a 6'0 fish. I really like the Walden Compact Disc but its a couple of hundred dollars more.

If you hunt around you should be able to find a decent second hand board.
Kids trash stuff.
My daughter is now four and will be in the water for her first go in the next couple of weeks.

Out of interest. I've got a two year old son who loves the sea and is forever jumping on my board and pretending to surf. I can't wait to get him in the water, but my wife is a bit twitchy about letting him go with me.

Any tips for convincing my better half that I'm not gonna drown him?

I've seen a soft fish board, shop around, but i'm not sure if this is the best option, speak to shop owners

get her a couple of surfing lessons too and get her hooked - she'll want to be in the water with you guys then
