just how strong are Torq boards?

Mine are detachable. I just wrap it up like this though. If you got the same brand/type that was in the link, you’ll be impressed with the quality at that price. I’ve transported boards to Mexico twice with one, and it protected the boards well. The shoulder strap broke off in transit, though. I should’ve taken it off! The plastic attachment points are not terribly robust.

My only issue with the board bag is once I was driving in torrential rain for 5-6 hours. The rain leaked into the fin zippers so much that I ended up a bag full of water. That should be very rare for you though! Definitely would recommend a board bag than a sock for car roof.

The zipper is NOT waterproof! I think this is intentional so that water drains out/evaporates. I left mine out in the rain before and it got water inside. I’m sure water also gets in at the fin slot as well.

I once saw some canoe kooks driving with a top side up in torrential rain.
They continued driving with the ever heavier bending canoe until the roof racks collapsed and the canoe broke in half!

any tips on getting sand out / not getting it in? As I said, I don't have much room to maneuver so I plan to put the board in its bag at the beach and keep it there till next time I get to the beach. Where I surf it's not really a problem, since board almost never touches sand, but could happen at other beaches.

Don't worry about the sand. By the next time you're at the beach. The bag has hopefully dried up so you just need to take the board out and pour out the sand.

What my friends do is that they always rinse with fresh water after surf and dry it up with a towel. But I'm too lazy to do that.

Sometimes a bit blows in, but for the most part it hasn’t been an issue for me. You learn how to face it so it’s ready when you get out of the water and also downwind. I definitely always try to keep the board sand free from water to bag, that could get ugly lol.
