Advise for shoes for a diabetic

I am looking to see what type of shoes I should get. The areas I surf at have large quantities of rocks or seashell pieces. Both of these can cause cuts to my feet which could result into serious problems for a diabetic. So I am looking for an idea or a suggestion for something that I can surf with and avoid the pitfalls of possibly cutting my feet. I am looking at some neoprene socks that claim to be cut proof also 3mm shoes/boots. Thanks for any assistance.

I would go for booties - the socks wont be particularly cutproof and probably not really great for surfing. You can get 'reef booties' if you dont need the extra warmth (but less flexibility) of a 3mm set. Not getting your feet cut on reefs is a big thing for the tropics, so there are plenty of options

I dont wear booties but most people seem to prefer the ones with a separated big toe; suggest getting them one size smaller because they stretch in the water/they need to be tight to not roll around when standing and pull the wetsuit over the top of the boot around the ankle (otherwise the boot fills up with water)

Thank you never needed something like this before but getting older now and don't want to have issues that can come from something I can prevent.

Separated big toe helps keep the boot from twisting around.....there are some brands that have fairly thick soles now that should keep you nick and cut free. I remember reading about the older generation and how they used to surf in keds sneakers before reef booties were a "thing".

These are the ones I had seen in the shop....they looked too thick for my needs but would seem to offer plenty in the way of protection.

I've seen SUPer's use the Vibram Five Fingers shoes. Might work for you if you don't need the warmth. Some models have a lace up, for a snug fit.

I use a split toe ninja type Reef booty by O'Neill , tough soles and two way adjustment to fit well. Also drain vents.

Found that Bodyglove makes a 3T Barefoot shoes. Cheaper than Vibram.

Me too....on my second pair now....good quality and the big reason; they come in size 14 unlike most other brands....

Thank you everyone. I am actually going to try both the Body Gloves and the Vibrams and see which is better for me.May try the ninjas if I don't like the Vibrams or the Body Gloves just not sure of the boot style for warm water surfing yet.
