Good board size for a beginner?

Postby Matixfan87 » Tue Apr 29, 2008 4:57 am

I want to ride a short board. I don't really like longboards. I'm 5'7. Any suggestions?

*takes deep breath, counts to 10*

In the words of Taj Burrow! Start on a longer board first, you will progress much faster and your style will be all the better for it and then progress to a shorter board once you feel your skills have out grown the board and not before.

just an observation.....
have you ever ridden a longboard?
If not then how do you know you don't like them. generally beginners who have tried both end up preferring longboards. at least until they're cutting the face.

Yes. I have ridden longboards before. I have also tried shortboards. I have heard that riding longboards are easier to learn on. And now I hear it again. So, I'll take the advice. Thanks for the insight.

If you know 100% that you will get into shortboarding after you have learnt the basics and got comfortable then perhaps starting on an intermederary board like a 7'6+ mal might work.

However i do agree a longboard will provide a much more pleasing learning experience

Any suggestions on what brand of board to get? Should I go with a used board to start with? What has worked out best in every ones' experience?

used board -> great deal, just ding it to death.

If you're a small/light guy, think about fun/evolution/hybrid/whatever shape (those things between minimal and real shortboard) a few inches shorter than people suggest.

they make sense though... the average beginner cant be considered as physically outstanding, if you are, go short.

brand aint important. A secondhander is the best bet. Something cheap that wont break the bank but in still ridable condition. New surfers tend to be really heavy on surfboards so a secondhander is ideal to thrash around
