Board bag question.

Postby Bub » Fri Mar 14, 2008 3:53 pm

Sorry if this is a stupid question but figure I'd ask so I do the right thing. My current board I just bought is 7'2''. I seriously doubt I'll ever get a smaller board, but someday if the funding becomes available to me, I could see myself purchasing a 9ft"ish" longboard. I really want to get a boardbag to protect my 7'2'' for this surfing season upcoming (200 miles each way to transport the board on top of car to beach each session). Is it ok to by a larger board bag that can hold a 9' ft. board in it and also have it useful for the 7'2'' board? Is there problems with carrying a small board in a larger bag? Just wondering, as always, I'm trying to get the most out of my limited $$$ for the sport/hobby I love.

Yea it is worth getting. a big bag can protect it for shorter journeys and shouldn't get damaged by lttle stones etc. there will be quite a bit of loose bag there but shouldn't matter too much

It'll be fine if you can put up with 2 foot of bag flapping around for 200 miles!!!
When you have 2 boards what are ya gonna do? Better just get a 10 foot bag so that there is enough width for them both!!

On the grand scheme of things a fitting bag isn't going to break the bank and will be less hassle. Get a separate bag for both boards.

Second that, bic bags are cheap. Remember its just going on the rack. If you want to travel (fly) you may have to rethink.

You can get away with a longer bag, won't hurt it, but Real Pol is right, what will you do when you get that longboard and you need to take them both with you?
Get the bag to fit the 7'2" now, get a longer bag with the longboard later.

There's an 8ft. min-mal styled board bag on ebay at the moment. New for $55 including shipping. Would that be a good fit/buy for my 7'2'' board or should I be able to find something for a much better price? Its looks fairly basic, its not a coffin style one or anything...most of those kind go for well over $100.

Over $100??? I bought Dakine day bag for my 9'6" last summer for $72.00 from a surf shop and that was regular price.

Ooops mis read your post. You said coffin style over $100. Yep your right there. Unless your going air you should only need a day bag and not a coffin. I think you need to get bags that fit your boards. They will last for years and years.

get a bag to fit your board... they're not that expensive. when you're buying your longboard push them to throw in a bag. have 3 boards and got a bag with each one.... most of these shops are just happy to have money in the till. some often have deals where they include leash, wax, and a bag. and if they don't push them for it. they'll often cave.

I've already bought a board from a guy locally. Its a 7'2'' rounded nose minimal/funboard (whatever you want to call it). On E-bay I saw 2 options for a board bag. Option 1 was an 8 ft. rounded nose bag or a 7'6'' thruster style bag. Didn't see any currently listed for a 7'2'' rounded nose. Also I figured the 7'6'' might not fit since althought it gives 4 extra inches, the bag shape is narrow at the nose and the board might not fit in all the way. So the 8 ft. bag seemed to be the only one that works for the size since its only a little bit bigger than the board (extra 10 inches). I guess I could wait until I see something that is a better fit. Although I'd hate to buy a bag over the internet and have it be too tight and not fit.

probably right about the 7'6" bag. the 8' should work if you can fold back the excess when you tie the board down. the flapping will drive you mad over 200km or more.
slight chance if you ask in local surf shops of getting a repaired bag. prob unlikely but if budget really is an issue you could save a few bucks. got one with a board before just a bit of damage to the zip. does the job. wouldn't travel with it tho.

You can make your own. Here's how I made mine:

2 months later and I finally bought that board bag (it was an FCS 8 foot bag). Total cost was $70 after shipping. My current board is 7'2'' and dinged up a little so it may only have a few years on it at best. The bag will allow some flexibility in size for a next board that could fit in my bag (anywhere from 8ft down, but I doubt I'll ever go smaller than 7ft.) I may buy a longboard (9ft +) someday but I'll just get a bag to fit that one if it ever happens. One step at a time though.
