best board for weight/height

Postby honeybmpc » Mon Apr 14, 2008 12:06 am

I'm not a surfer but my husband has been learning to surf & his crappy cheap board has broken, I don't think it was big enough anyway...he can stand up on the board & ride the wave a little but it wasn't holding his weight.

My question is what are the best dimensions for my husband who is 6 foot 4inches & weighs about 125kg (275lbs or there abouts)

thanks in advance

Depends, but since he is still learning I would say the biggest thing you can find, and when he can surf down the face and wants to start turning get him a nice 7'6"+ minimal, unless he wants to take up longboarding, then just stick with a longboard.

I would think that the biggest he would need to go would be around the 9'6" - 9'10" range. Will easily float him and make learning a lot easier for him.
Check Craigslist and see if you can find a deal.

yep a longboard with plenty of volume sounds like the best way to go

thanks for your replies. Sorry should've been more detailed.
He currently has a 7 foot 6 board which he can get up onto easily & can ride the wave for a little bit but he doesn't seem to be able to ride it for long (not holding his weight).

He said he doesn't want a long board, do you guys know if an 8 foot board is much bigger than a 7 foot 6 board? maybe that will hold him
without being a longboard

Please ignore faf.

An 8 ft boad is about 6 inches bigger than a 7'6" board...

Sheesh. Actualy its a lot to do with the rest of the boards dimensions, width, thickness, shape etc. An extra 6 inches is all in the middle (assuming same shape etc) and a fair bit more float.

He's likely not riding the wave moer due to skill level and wave selection than float in the board, IMO a 7'6" is a fair bit too small to start/learn on for a 125kg bloke.

Get a decent longboard as CHarvey said, much quicker to learn on then he can move down in size later.
