Mellowave boards

Postby Brisbanebound » Sat Dec 23, 2006 9:45 pm

Hiya, I'm new to posting on this forum but have been reading the posts for a while and have picked up some really useful info, so thanks!!
Anyway, I'm thinking of ordering a new custom shortboard from Mellowave in Bude and was wondering if anyone has seen/used one of their boards?
The prices are pretty damn good for a custom board but can anyone stand up for their quality?!!
Thanks

Yeah that's what I was thinking. It looks like a one man operation working out of a surf shop in Bude. The website is OK and the few pictures of the boards on there look pretty nice.
I'm planning on going down to Croyde in January so I might head on down to Bude and check out the boards in person.
The truth is though that at that price I'm not sure I can resist!

I have found there site a few weeks ago and posted the exact same question. I was talking to my friend tonight who use to glass boards and he said that chances are it will only have one coat of glass on it and it will only last a year or two at best. I'm not saying that this is what mellow wave do in anyway shape or form.

There's very little saving to be made from putting only 1 coat of glass on a board. Glass costs just over 2 pounds per m and if you put both layers on the deck at the same time you use almost the same amount of resin as putting on just the 1 coat. So the saving on a shortboard would be maybe 10 pounds. They might do that but i'd be very surprised becasue of the the issues it would casue and the insueing complaints and bad press from customers when their boards break or don't last long.

MellowWave Surfboards

Postby longboardingmark » Sat Mar 10, 2007 4:28 pm

Hi,
Just though I would clear up a few questions. Mellowwave surfboards are made by Steve james who has been shaping since the 80's there are no corners cut in making the boards we just thought we would do them at trade price for a while to get things going we even do a proper gloss rather than the speed coat that some people are now using..
If you have any questions email us at Mellowwave had we will get back to you asap. The boards will not be staying this cheap forever!
Hope this all makes sense and answeres some of your questions,
Mark

There Great Boards. I've Had One. Totally Recommend Getting In Touch With Steve And Have A Chat With Him About What Kind Of Board You Want.

A short board for $200...that's nuts. Cost me $205 just to get my 6'2" glassed. I say go for it, even if you can't use the board now you won't find a better deal for a new custome board probably ever.
