Choosing a board

Just getting back into the sport after a LONG layoff...college, working, family, kids, etc...Anyways, looking for a board to get back into the sport. I used to longboard on borrowed board, I think it was 8' or so. I'm pretty much going to stick to the So Cal/San Diego area breaks. I'm a big boy: 6'4, 265-275lbs. Any suggestions, size, length, thickness?

what if he wants to get into longboarding, thers no point buying an 8' board because he will just have to buy a bigger one later on, but that depends on what type of surfing he wants to get into

I read his post wrong. I thought he wanted to stay in the 8 foot range.

Yeah I'd for sure go with something in the 10 foot range, and about 3 1/2" thick. That should float ya pretty good.

yh if you want a cruiser i agree with wood on this one soemthing in the 10ft range and 3" + thickness with a nice big fin, get cruisin down thoes lines, then get some toes on the noes, its the best feeling in the world.

I've been seeing some 9'4, 9'8 boards on ebay, 3+ thick, what do you think?

Anyone heard of Isle Surfboards? They're based out of San Diego area. They claim they use Australian Foam blanks...Anyone have any input? Just curious, prices seem pretty cheap, but kind of weary. Check them out if you have a chance...islesurfboards.com

I actually saw an isle board a few days ago i got a chance to speak to the guy he seemed to be pretty chuffed/happy with it. It was his first board so i suppose thats not much of guide. Unfortunatly you wont see many of them about in fact thats the only one i have seen. Hoever because its an internet only site i would be very weary of those boards. There are loads of good surf shops around san diego so just take a drive around and find something you feel is right at the right price. GL

Yeah, this will be my first board back into the swing of things after a long layoff. In addition, I don't want to break the bank, I think the boards run about 475 or so. Well, i'll take your advice and cruise around looking for a used board. Any shops you recommend that would have some choice used boards? I usually surf the SD areas, MB, PB, and also around Carlsbad/Encinitas areas. Thanks for the input 'salute

I usually surf around ocean beach/sunset cliffs. When i wen shopping for a board i tried a few places but ended up buying from south coast in ocean beach. If you want a decent second hand board try second chance sports off point loma near ocean beach (im sure there are a pile of other good places)

475 sounds about right that should include leash and fins though. As for model have a chat with the shops they will help you choose the right board according to your experience. Persoanlly id opt for something you can grow into.

Ps - if you find yourself down OB just give me a holla im in everyday

pss - i bought a tdk(which is locally shaped) 7.8 for 450 (full set) but ended up riding a 7.4 southcoast thruster which coast nothing because it was gven to me by someone who found it in an alley

I surfed an Isle surfboard after my brother didn't like the board and I can tell you don't waste your money. I surf a beachbreak and barely dinged it and the foam was exposed. They are machine made I heard and poorly glassed/made. After if basically became unrepairable I made a board stand out of it. Go to rolandsurfboards.com or cheapsurfboards.com. This guys makes nice boards and for reasonable prices. Good luck.
