Leash String Hole

Okay, this may be a bit of an odd one.
Last time I went surfing I noticed that the loop of string through my board that my leash attaches to was looking a little worn and frayed so next time we stopped off in a surf shop I grabbed another one from the counter but when I came to put it in I found that my hole is too small and it won't go through. So, my question is can I just drill out the hole a little larger so that the string fits or will that cause the foam to be exposed and therefore take on water and thus ruin my board?

Carby please remind me what sort of board you now have before I answer !
If it is an epoxy something, if you break the seal then water will destroy it .
I can't recall a leash set up that has a small hole ( but I'm going to look) most now have like an FCS plug with a bar you thread the leash cord under. Gives you a double loop strand onto the velco attachment.

I have a Beach Beat Longboard (in all honesty I bought it second hand so I cannot swear to it's structure) but I belive that it is a PU board. As it was hand made by a shaper (Chops Lascelles) and has a stringer.

Alas, mine does not have an FCS leash plug but a small hole that goes through the back of the fin box. If it helps I can get a close up picture of it when I get home?

If you are having trouble sticking a doubled up cord through the hole you can try sticking some fishing line (20 pound line or so if it's tight) through the hole then go around the bent end of the cord and back through the hole and use the line to pull the cord through the hole

It would probably be worth taking it to a repair shop and getting a plug fitted on the top of the board, one reason the string could be wearing is abrasion on the fin and also having a board rebound on the leash attached to the fin box is ask for a knife edge to rebound towards you.
this problem was worse when the leash hole was in the base of the fin and the leash was surgical rubber.

I fear I have misled people. It's not the not that is frayed. It's part of the loop. My problem is that the string is too large for the hole. I think I will take it to a repair place and ask them to open up the hole slightly.

I use line that is made for a fishing handline for the loop. I quit surfing for a while and during that time I took up fishing and have a load of fishing gear. The line is smaller than the line sold for the loop in the surf store but just as tough or maybe tougher.

If you bought the wrong size bicycle tire, would you re-weld your 26 inch MTB rim to fit the 27/700c road tire ? Just go back to the shop and get the right size tire. In your case, the simple solution is get a thinner leash rope. At the shop, we always have to swap out the strings when selling leashes. The Big wave leashes come with thicker strings and the Basics or Comps come with much thinner ones. When you have a thru the box leash mount, you need to use the thinner ropes.

Do not adjust the diameter of the hole in the box.

In the end I pinched the string from my Missus' board and put the thicker one on hers.
