LongBoard Single Fin

Hey guys, I'm thinking about upgrading to a bigger fin for my 8'8 longboard, I've heard that while making it harder to turn It stablizes the board alot more for cross steps walking up and down the board and all that fun stuff.. What brands and sizes are good in your opinion

I would like feedback from fellow longboarders that use them please.

i have a single turbo tunnel (7.5 i think) on my 9' board and i like it. it makes takeoffs more stable, and generally everything seems more, err, word that means obvious and pronounced but is neither of those words. ok thats my opinion. im off to read a dictionary

I've heard the Greeno,... I think it is called.... is excellent, don't have one myself as I don't have a longboard yet...I am about to purchase a new one and will probably get this fin...it is said to have flex at the tip, good for noseriding AND maneuverabiltiy

I have a 10' that a put a Longboard House Squirrel Tail fin, it comes in all different sizes. Designed with a lot of flex for great turning and hold for noserides. I think it runs about $40+/-. Certain there are plenty of fins that will meet your expectations, that's just one.

That's a Greenough as in George Greenough. Good fins for sure.

General rule of thumb is the more surface area on the fin, ie, the wider and taller then the more drive you will get. The downside is you will lose a lot of manouvrability. The narrower the fin and shorter, the looser your board will feel but you lose drive, power and grip.

A good nose-riding fin needs lots of surface area but you still want to be able to turn your board. So choose a fin with a nice wide base, that still has plenty of thickness through the middle then narrows through to a thin tip. That will offer you a nice mix of both characters. The Joel Tudor fin mentioned above is a good example. Go for about 8.5" to 9". Anything more and you;ll not be able to turn your board.

I have a 9.25 Josh Farberow Flex fin in my board. The Greenough 4C would be good for you too.

Hey babyboarder - I reckon you should ditch your fin! Please don't take it the wrong way but I think the right fin turns your board into a magical ride and having tried them, I do not rate the Turbo T fins at all. If you are even passing through Barnstaple drop by our shop and I will lend you a perfect fin for you and your board for the day.

I know alot of people on this forum knock the turbo but I find it gives me more speed and helps me catch more waves. I did compare to a regular single fin and didn't catch near as many with the turbo. I would say if you have a bud that has a turbo try it out for a session. Good luck

I have a 9" "Future Fin" on my new board and just love it. I have used it with side bites but I just took off the side bites but have not had any surd to try it with just the single fin yet.

It's definitely got hold and stability. It's got good drive too. I wouldn't say it's hard to turn, you just need your foot over the fin. But, don't expect to snap the board around...longer, drawn out (smoother) turns.

Note: this is the only longboard fin I've ridden.

My board is 9.1 and my fin is 8.5 inches, with the tip centred about 2 inches from the back of the board, and it feels good to me

I'm using a Cheyne Horan 'Star Fin'
a lot of people bag the star fin for snagging kelp and tangling the legrope but one of the better fins for allround surfing despite it's looks.

Seriously, you don't need that much fin....use your rail, don't rely on your fin as a rutter.
