Stepping down to a short board.

Bonjourrrrrr,

Been a while since I was last here.
Decided, as a lot of people here have (after reading a few post) to step down. My question is........ what size board do I need?

No, my question is, how much difference in performance for me would there be between a 6'8" and a 6'10" short board? Fancy a Webber afterburner/fat burner not too sure yet. Anyone got either of them? I'm 6'2" and 14 stone at the moment, but looking to trim down a bit after a long honeymoon in the Maldives watching people surf everyday, but not able to pay $150 (US)/day to surf on the island!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What are you dropping down to from?

I dont think there will be a huge difference between a 6'8 and 6'10 unless the 6'8 is ultra skinny

its not just about the 2" length difference, depends on the thickness and width a lot too. Webber boards are awsome, I have the webber model and its the best board ive ever ridden. Im really keen on the afterburner - looks like a nice board.
The fatburner is similar to the afterburner, but its thicker,wider and has a lower rocker. It catches small waves easily. I think this would obviously be the safer bet and be the easier board for you to use out of the two,

never had a go on a 6'10 or a 6'8 board, but between a 6'2 and a 6'4 there is a difference (that i found). firstly, the 6'2 was slightly easyer to manouver and the 6'4 was quicker to paddle on = easyer wave catching.

this may not be the case between the two lengths you're talking about, but i should imagine there would be a difference. but the width and thickness would definately play a part in the difficulty of learning on the board.

I'm dropping down from a 8' O'Shea Long/mini mal type board

Like others have said the 2" diff is not really noticable - you will really notice a huge diff depending on thickness and width. However because you are riding an 8fter thats a fairly big drop in size all round. I would be inclined to say if at all possible beg/borrow a simular board you are thinking of dropping down to and see how it works for you.

My new board has arrived. Went for a Webber fatburner 6'9 and its wicked. The step down is like riding a Mountain bike for ages and then going on a BMX!
