just wondered how much wax you put on your shortboards when used along with a deck grip?

My minimal was basically covered in it until I figured out where my feet should be, then I put less on.

With my new shortboard Ive only put wax where Im expecting my front foot to end up? Anyone else just do this or do you wax the whole deck? I know theres no hard fast rule on this but I was just wondering

I wax just in front of my tailpad on the board that has one, and then where my front foot is, so i have a gap of unwaxed board between front and back foot. On my other boards with no tailpad there waxed all the way.

You want to wax most of your board like a foot or two past where your front foot is. So you can still land a trick if your feet lose positioning.

In which case you need to wax most of the board 'cos who knows where your feet will land when you pop up

As Taj Burrow's put it when talking about the same subject "I dont get it. Why wax just two patches of board? Dont you ever move your feet? Do you expect your feet to be in the same position to pull into a barrel and when you alleyoop?"

Wax the whole damn lot I say!!

I wax the whole thing, except for like the very nose. That way I can kinda grip it with my chest as well as moving my feet where they need to be to trim, turn, etc.

I know people who wax this tiny little patch of wax EXACTLY where their front foot goes, consequently they are boring surfers and constantly have the 'poo stance' thing going on

you need a bit in front of the tailpad for when you move your foot forward to trim, and a decent amount for where your front foot goes, and a little back from your front foot where you normally sit, so if you dont know where your gonna be stood you may as well wax all the way from the deck grip up to a foot or two off the nose. After a while youll notice it wears down quicker on the bits you stand on and then you can just wax around there next time you re-do the wax.

Typically, on a shortboard, you wax up to the logo, where your face usually is when paddling. For a shortboard, no real reason why your foot would venture higher up than that.

Same here. I start my wax a few inches above the tailpad, and end it about 3/4 of the way up (roughly around where my head is when paddling).

Knees to chest! That's my saying. (if you have a tailpad)

When it is really pumping you will be pissed if you keep slipping on a non-waxed spot!

I used to do this, but also further towards the tail so I could grip the board with my legs when sitting on it. I soon stopped the first time I surfed without my wetsuit...........the rash was agony!

Generally I wax it from the deck pad up to my chest, but then I wax along the rails up to near the nose so I can grip it when duck diving, etc. However, I've heard from some pros like Shane Beschen, they wax the whole board because they're shifting their feet a lot in the tube. As he puts it, 'you never know when you'll need every inch of your board'.
