The story continues... what shortboard will it be?...

So... I got some money... I currently own a 7'6" and I am looking to buy a shortboard to add to my quiver and start trying on a shortboard, I am not really looking into having comments about "You should stick with your 7'6" for now". I am looking to discuss a little the boards I have been taking a look at. I am no pro, but I'm looking at a decent board that will be good from small to high waves and intermediate to keep learning on. I do not know what would b best for me but personally I've been re-searching a little of the Channel Island surfboards and I might go ahead for a 6'3" M-BM (18 3/4 x 2 1/2).

talk to a local shaper. they will be able to figure out exactly what you need and make it for you for a lot less money than a ci board shaped for someone else that you might not get on with.

It’s interesting – I’m noticing a lot of folks from across the pond repeatedly suggesting that a chat with the local shaper is the best way to get a feel for what might be the right shape given his or her knowledge of local conditions. That’s probably the best advice.

Not sure about other So Cal / U.S. surfers, but I’ve never actually met a local, known shaper. (I’m not counting my stoner buddy that just picked up Shaping for Dummies volume 3 because of all the pretty pictures.) I think you’d be pretty hard pressed to actually catch a fleeting glimpse of Phil Becker or Al Merrick much less have a meaningful conversation with them about appropraite shape.

Back to the OP. It sounds to me you’ve never or have little exposure to shortboards. The board you picked seems to be geared towards someone extremely comfortable on a shortboard. If you’re sticking with CI, you might consider the Flyer which is way forgiving with its massive tail and nose sections. At best I would consider the MX which is what I ride.

I'm in the same position as you moving down from a 7'2, just bought a 6'7, 20 1/2 so has lots of float for my first shortboard, havnt got it yet but was second hand from ebay you can get some real bargains...

Not true had a chat with a few very well known shapers on a few occations they arnt as obscure or hard to get hold of as you might think well of course it depends on who you know

But you dont need merrick or becker to craft you something amazing there are some real tallented shapers out there. Im sure thats true across the water as well

I just found a deal of an mbm for $370 or so and all the flyer's - mx's are around $500 - $600

Edit: I might go for a CI Flyer 6'6" for $350.

there are a few shapers who are in their shops daily...bruce jones is there everyday in his shop in sunset beach.

BUY IT

Bought the CI Flyer 6'6" for $325 with traction pad, fins and leash. What a deal! It's just a little aged (yellowish) but no dings or anything. I'm gonna clean that wax and put a new coat, should look amazingly nice! I'll post some pics later tonight!

Haven't really tried it yet. Just barely but there were no waves. I personally love my 7'6" polyester board... this one is the same... so I am sure I'll love it just as much.

(I know it's kinda dirty, gonna take off all that wax and re-wax it as well as clean those spots on it. Should look like a new baby when done)
