Tonga Surf Spot Map

Tonga is located about two-thirds of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand and for this reason can be a reasonable expensive location to get to. Tongatapu is the island that has some of the best surf Tonga has to offer, and a chain offshore reefs that have great quality surf. It is pretty shallow out there and many of the reefs that are surfable at high tide are completely dry at low tide.

Tonga enjoys surf year round and if you are looking for consistent surf you can't do a lot better. There are two main surfing seasons in Tonga, winter (April to October) sees south swells generated from the roaring forties tracking their way to the Tongan coast. The rest of the year is still incredibly consistent and waves are still in the 4-5ft range, generated from the North Pacific and locally from cyclones.

Tonga waves of note are Motels, The Pass and multiple spots on the Hakau Mama'u Reefs. There is plenty of opportunity for a bit of exploration.

If you are serious about surfing and travel you will need a decent surfing guide book. Take a look at the Stormrider Guide Europe, Stormrider Guide North America and the World Stormrider Guide books. We cannot emphasise just how good these books are.
