Things To Know Before Surfing

Related Articles >> Book a Surf Lesson

Check out the Surfing Equipment for Beginners page to find out what surfboard and other equipment you'll need to start you off. It's also a good idea to have a look at the things you should be aware of when surfing so you don't hurt yourself, hurt anyone else, or annoy everyone on the beach. Find these on the Basic Rules of Surfing page. ("Surfing" and "rules" in the same sentence? Ahhhhh!). When you have completed the Surfing Knowledge Quiz you are allowed to continue reading the next section. No cheating now!

Pre-Surf Warm-Up And Stretching

The Pre-surf warm-up and stretching is an important part of your surfing routine. If you are going to regularly surf and want to be ready for the waves, make sure you do not sustain any unnecessary injury (especially if you are surfing in cold water) while in the water. Without going into detail, just make sure you stretch all the main muscle groups and don't enter the water cold. (A good overall level of fitness will ensure that you surf to the best of your abilities and that you aren't exhausted after your warm-up session). Find out more about preparing for a surf.

Your First Surfing Lesson

Surf WaxYou are now at the water's edge, board in hand and ready to paddle out. But wait, there's more. Have you waxed up your board? You don't want to slip off as you get up on your feet for the first time. Check out the Surfboard Wax section to find out all about surf wax and how it will help you out while riding the waves. Next, have a look down at your legs and ask yourself two questions:

Question One: Should you have waxed your legs to look good in just boardshorts?
Question Two. Is your leash (leg rope) attached to your back leg at the ankle?

Let's not worry about question one, but if you are now panicking about question two, not knowing what on earth a leash is, or which leg is your back leg (they both look the same to you), then worry no more. All is explained later. For now go and have a look at Surfing Lesson One to find out what to do next.

If you need further information and can't find the answer, why not take a look at the Surfing for Beginners section of the forum.
