Cowells. Great place to longboard and learn to surf. Cowells is actually just inside of the several peaks that comprise Steamers Lane and is well-known as the best beginner's surf spot in Santa Cruz.
Best time to go at low tide.

Steamer Lane
Description:
Steamer Lane is a famous surfing location in Santa Cruz, California. It is just off a point on the side of cliffs in the West Cliff residential area near downtown Santa Cruz, providing easy access and a good vantage point for viewing. (Taken off Wiki)
The O\'Neill Cold Water Classic series includes Steamer Lane as one of the stops. The competition takes place at the beginning of November each year.

Waddell Creek
Description:
Waddell Creek has a number of reef and beach breaks with a rivermouth in the middle for good luck.
It works in a small swell and will hold decent size. Smaller days are suitable for beginners.
