DEE WHY, New South Wales (Saturday, October 3, 2009) - After two consecutive lay-days the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic is back on this morning at Dee Why in bumpy two-to-three foot (1 metre) conditions. The third of seven stops on the ASP Women's World Tour will kick off the day's proceedings with the sudden-death elimination Round 2 before potentially moving in to Round 3.

The Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic capitalized on the opening day of the waiting period and saw reigning two-time ASP Women's World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 21, take her opening round victory in a stacked heat over defending event champion and prodigious talent Tyler Wright (AUS), 15, and 2005 ASP Women's World Champion Chelsea Hedges (AUS), 25, while Hawaiian regular-footer Melanie Bartels (HAW), 27, blasted the day's highest scores.

"A new swell has filled in and although we have onshore conditions, we're going to start Round 2 at 8am," Matt Wilson, Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic Contest Director, said. "We have currently put Round 3 on hold and will make a decision on whether to continue competition or not as the day progresses."

Gilmore will have a highly anticipated Round 3 rematch with Wright, who eliminated the reigning ASP Women's World Champion in Round 3 of last year's competition, in Heat 4.

Seven-time ASP Women's World Champion Layne Beachley (AUS), 37, will be in the day's opening heat, which could potentially be the last of her career. Beachley officially announced her retirement from professional surfing following the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic.

The Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic holds a waiting period from September 30 through October 5, 2009 and is webcast live at www.beachleyclassic.com
