Day 1 at The Relentless Boardmasters
Relentless Boardmasters in association with Vans 2009 kicked off this morning at Fistral with conditions at a good 3ft. Even though the clouds were prominent in the sky, it was still bright with a good crowd lining the shore line for the opening heats of the event.
Representing Great Britain, Mark Harris was the first Englishman to make it through his heat with Reubin Pearce following suit along with Matt Capel, Alan Stokes and Vans team rider Sam Lamiroy qualifying to the next round. Lamiroy's heat was full of drama with Joan Duru injuring himself during the 25 minute heat and being attended to by the first aid team. Duru then subsequently went onto win the heat, showing the high standard of surfers competing this year.
Best Wave and best average heat points were dominated by Patrick Beven from France and Travis Beckham of the USA.
Heat 17 of the first round will commence tomorrow morning at 9.30am, with Brit surfers Russell Winter, Micah Lester, Oli Adams and Johnny Fryer to name a few, still to surf.
The Beach Sessions start tomorrow evening in the Fistral Beach bar with The Blackout, We Are the Ocean, and Cornish bands Everything Burns and Downtown Riots setting the standard from 7.30pm. Tickets for the sessions can be picked up from tomorrow onwards at the box office located at the entrance to the Fistral Beach Trade Village which opens at 7pm.
The Vans Vert ramp will also be running skate and BMX demos from 7pm throughout the evening in the run up to the opening of the Trade Village to the public on Thursday morning.
The Relentless Boardmasters in association with Vans 2009 is the most complete event for lovers of music, surf and action sports. With 3 sites across Newquay offering surf, skate, bmx, daily live
music acts and a music festival for 12,500 people, including Cypress Hill and The Streets, the Relentless Boardmasters in association with Vans 2009 will be the highlight of the UK summer.
