Rottnest hosts Tooheys Extra dry Odyssey 20/20 WA series

The much anticipated blue ribbon event of the state open series heads offshore this weekend in what is shaping up to be war on water. Rottnest Island will play host to the Tooheys Extra dry Odyssey 20/20 state open series for 2005 as the states best open and older experienced competitive surfers do battle for cash and the prestigious title of overall series champions.

Many reputations and boards have been broken in past events at Rottnest as the raw ocean swells are intercepted by the islands position to provide large powerful contestable surf and this event will be no exception, with a rather healthy swell producing low pressure system should bear down on the Island for this weekend.

The open Odyssey 20/20 mens and womens division sees competitors over the age of 18 compete and is regarded as the blue ribbon division of the event as the overall winner of the opens after the 3 event series receives the crown of WA champion.

A new division has been catered for competitors with the introduction of the West Surfing Products Pro Junior division will see competitors under the age of 21 participate in the event.  In the past competitors who progressed from the junior state rounds straight into the opens found the transition a little daunting competing for the first time against the older experienced surfers in the open divisions.

“We needed a separate division for the smooth transition of the junior competitors into the open divisions.  In the past the juniors who progressed to open division status found the going some what intimidating surfing against the more established older surfers.  You could liken it to going from grade seven in primary school into the new world of first year high and we all know how scary this can be at times” said Surfing WA’s General Manager Mark Lane, “We should hopefully alleviate this, by introducing the Pro Junior division”, he added.

Other divisions to be run this weekend include the over 50, over 45, over 40, over 35 and over 28 men and womens.
