Freewave Challenge Presented by Billabong Comes To a Close

As the sun set over Kaena Point on New Year's Eve, the first Freewave Challenge Presented by Billabong came to a close after three full months of surfing action. The sport's first virtual event, the Freewave Challenge summarizes the best rides of the North Shore season and determines which surfers had the greatest free-surfing moments on video outside of the regular contest circuit.
The event period ran from October 1 through December 31 - generally regarded as Prime Time at the epicenter of surfing. And while the window for eligible rides to take place has shut, the flurry of fresh uploads will continue for several days to come, expanding the number of mind-blowing video clips available on the event website at www.FreewaveChallenge.com. Thus far entries have grown into the hundreds (running the gamut from deep tubes at Pipeline to futuristic aerial maneuvers at Rocky Point and Off-The-Wall) and will soon be filtered down to the top five nominees in the Tube Ride and Performance Ride categories.
Although the Freewave window has concluded, it is just the beginning of the process of debating which rides showcase the heaviest moments and most skillful surfing. The viewing public helps decide the finalist group, and the ultimate determination of excellence will be voted on by the surfers and videographers entered in the event, along with a large panel of surf media members from around the world. The top finishers will be counted down one by one until the Best Tube Ride and Best Performance Ride emerge from the entire season full of action. The surfer finalists and the videographers who captured their waves will share $40,000 in prize money in the all-new event as awards are handed out 30 days from now.
To see all the top entries and join in the debate over which is best, visit the event website at www.FreewaveChallenge.com and click on the "Video Hub."
