Alan Stokes claims Rip Curl English Championships Title
Alan Stokes tore apart the fun sized waves at Watergate Bay, Newquay to be crowned English Champion for the third time over the Mayday holiday weekend. He beat a resurgent Shaun Skilton into 2nd place with Reubin Pearce getting third ahead of Micah Lester in fourth.
The final was a climax of three days surfing on two peaks in which 20 English Champions were crowned over age groups from 12 to 50 years old.
The event organisers based themselves at the Extreme Academy building and with a barbeque courtesy of Fosters the event took advantage of three days of 2 to 4 foot surf and a blend of weather from the four seasons.
The highlight of Sunday’s surfing was the Davidoff Cool Water Tag Team event in which Team Bude consisting of open surfers Reubin Pearce, Joss Ash, Junior Reubyn Ash, woman Nicola Bunt and Longboarder Chris Thompson bagged the £1000 prize.
It was a profitable weekend for Nicola as she won the women’s title in a close fought final with her close friend and fellow St. Agnes surfer Dominique Munroe. Rip Curl rider Reubyn Ash also won his category, the Junior division, ahead of young rippers Tom Butler, Adam Thornton and another Rip Curl Team member Jayce Robinson.
Ben Skinner came out on top of the closest final in the Longboard category as he went wave for wave against Lee Ryan, Joe Howell and Watergate local Adam Zervais. There was an exceptional performance form Jamie Owen who took both the Senior (over 28) and Masters (Over 35) titles and because of his life long achievements in competitive surfing he was also awarded the Randall Davies Memorial trophy.
Fom Butler took the Cadet (under 16) title and was also awarded the Dave Gent Memorial Cup for the best performance from a Newquay junior.
