Cosmic Creek Combines Surfing, Music and Heritage

Billabong Cosmic Creek 2007

This year’s Cosmic Creek Contest scheduled at Salt Creek the weekend of September 28th through the 30th has some new twists. Not only will there be a concert, there will be two. Not only will there be a Charity for a surfer, there will be a whole host o charities aided. And not only will star surfers be riding eclectic (even eccentric) shapes from the 70’s, they will be playing music on stage as well.

“Cosmic Creek has grown into a surf-soul style festival,” says Honolua Surf Company Design/Marketing Director, Eric Diamond, who has run it for the last six years. “This year we’re giving the charity proceeds to the T.J. Martell Foundation, which will provide benefits to all kinds of needy beneficiaries. The music is great too. With the concerts, the surfboards the day at the beach, it has become more than a contest – it is a tribute to a big piece of our culture: the positive vibe and rhythm of surfing.”

Starting off the weekend will be a set by Donavon Frankenreiter at the Coach House in Capistrano Beach on Friday night September 28th. Then on Saturday night he will play again with a group of special guests. The Contest itself will commence the following day, Sunday September 30th. The Coach House has already sold out before the concerts were even publicly announced.

"Donavan and friends are the perfect musicians for this event,” says Enich Harris, Billabong’s Marketing Director, “Their music totally fits the vibe of the contest and the guest appearances will blow people away.”

A classic trip back to the 70’s where surfers are invited to compete on vintage single fins, twins and fishes from that decade, the annual event has become one of California’s most popular and soulful cultural gatherings. More than 70 surfers will explore the era of experimental equipment competing in alternating single and twin fin heats.

“It gives insight and perspective into the roots of surfing culture,” explains Diamond. “And we want to give back all this rich vibe and to the community.”

Cosponsored by Surfer Magazine, Sector 9, Kustom and Von Zipper, this year’s Cosmic Creek looks like it will deliver a little cultural insight, experimental revival, great music and pure fun – a positive tonic for the health of 21st Century surfing
