Cork Surf Club newest ISA affiliate runs Spring Break Surf

Cork Surf Club is the newest surf club to have become affiliated with the ISA in Ireland. CSC has been on the cards for a long time and is now starting to get off the ground. CSC feels that because of the large coastline in Cork, the potential to develop surfing is vast. CSCs main aim is to maintain and actively encourage good relations between the surfers the club represents, the public and the authorities under whose jurisdiction members of CSC find themselves. CSC also wishes to help protect and promote respect for the environment that all surfers in Cork use.

Although Cork has long been over looked for events in surfing circles this may be about to change with the very first CSC event Spring Break Surf on the 17th of April 2005 being a resounding success, despite torrential rain and heavy winds. The day kicked off at 11am with the committee having to make the tough decision of whether to go ahead with it in the conditions or postpone for another more favourable day. Having decided to go ahead, the task of putting up the marquee and getting the competitors sorted and ready to go caused a few small headaches. However the wind died down and the rain stopped just in time to send the first competitors into the water. Both wind and rain held off until just before the junior final, causing the judges to have to sit under umbrellas with rain dripping everywhere. The competing surfers rose above the difficult surfing conditions to pull off some great surfing in a very relaxed event.

Once all the waves had been caught and all the wipeouts wiped out everyone headed up to the Blue Horizon for mugs of hot coffee the odd pint and the prizegiving. The junior winner David Little was presented with a beautiful board by Jon from H2OExtreme and the senior winner Dylan Buckley became the owner of a brand new wetsuit from incide. All other finalists were then called up to receive applause and a prize from one of the sponsors of the event. The sponsors of the event were H2O Extreme, Incide, Tubes, Jellyfish, Cork Rocks and Cork Custom Shapes. A good day was had by all and everyone went home tired but happy.

T-Bay cleans up

Also good news from the recent sewerage problems in T-Bay. Following complaints from the local club and the ISA, the water quality has inproved greatly and the County Council has reacted swiftly by ensuring daily checks of water quality and reporting to the local club. It appears that a fault in the system allowed sewerage to flow from a disused outfall pipe and this problem has now been addressed. A new sewerage treatment plant is under construction and a new outfall pipe is currently being installed. Please do not surf in the area around this construction!
