Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships Day 3

Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships 2007

In a surprise result on the third day of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships Venezuelan surfer Francisco Bellorin got the better of several favourites. Taking advantage of the small waves, Brazilian surfers also ruled the rooster with their modern style surf.

Not even Francisco Bellorin himself could believe he had won against such experienced surfers as Frenchman Charles Martin and American surfer Corry Arrambide. Even though this is his fourth participation at the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, he was still surprised to get first place on a heat that featured some of the major surfers in the competition.

This is a surprise win, since I know my adversaries well and I was aware of the difficulties I would be facing today" said Francisco, "After today, I believe I can go all the way to the finals and who knows, I might even win it.

Even though Portugal no longer has any athlete fighting at the main board, the day went quite well for the home team’s expectations. There were three heat winners and nobody got eliminated. “Today was a decisive day, because some of us had no margin for error. Fortunately, everybody handled the pressure quite well and got through without any problem”, team selector José Braga acknowledged. Amongst the Portuguese surfers, Tomé Simões deserves a special note, having surfed the early morning biggest waves in spectacular fashion and winning with some ease.

The standard of surfing is very high, but I managed to come out the winner. This was a good victory, and I needed the morale boost after the earlier bad results, but I’m perfectly aware that I will need to raise my game if I want to get in the top 20.

On the third day of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, the Brazilian surfers once again proved they are one of the world’s greatest surfing powers, with spectacular rides on waves that are very similar to the ones “back home”. In the Boys Under-18 category, Jadson André, who surfs out of Ponte Negra, a wave breaker quite similar Costa de Caparica, showed the qualities that make him the current leader of the Brazilian Under-18 Championships and the former winner of the Under-14s (2004) and Under-16s (2006) titles.

I’m here to win it and I don’t even want to think of going to the repechage. My mind is set on the ultimate victory”, he said.

His countryman Miguel Pupo seems to be on the same frame of mind, with victory on the Under-16 category in his sights. “I’m not used to this cold, but I’m starting to feel quite at home and so I hope to win”, stated the son of Wagner Pupo, who last week got the runner-up spot on the Brazilian title, at 38.
