Volcom’s VQS Grand Championships will be held at Manu Bay Raglan

The cream of New Zealand’s surfing talent will descend on the country’s finest wave at Manu Bay, Raglan on April 22nd in a bid to win Volcom’s VQS Grand Championships and a earn a shot at US $100,000!

What started off as a series of free events in Wellington, Gisborne and Raglan, now climaxes as the finalists from each contest travel to the famous left point in what promises to be a four-division battle royale.

The eventual winners of both the Open and Junior Divisions will be flown to Newport Beach California to represent New Zealand at the VQS World Championships which carries a similar prize purse to the World Tour Events surfed by Kelly Slater and Andy Irons.

It’s a massive opportunity,” says Volcom Events Co-ordinator Ryan Cowell. “These guys started out surfing in a free comp and now they’re just a couple of heats away from representing their country on an international playing field and bagging more money than the world’s top pro surfers would at an elite tour event. The stakes are huge but the vibe of the day still stays true to what the VQS is famous for – an entertaining festival that’s fun for the whole family.

The VQS Championships will also feature a girl’s and a grommets division with major prizes up for grabs plus the usual activities, giveaways and good times for all.

Surf contests these days are big business,” says Cowell. “Kids are under pressure, parents are under pressure and the fun has really been sucked out of surfing heats. It’s Volcom’s aim to just go nuts, put on a day everyone can enjoy but still have the big rewards. That’s the essence of the VQS.
