Cape Town hosts first Rip Curl 2005 GromSearch event
Cape Town will host the first of eight Rip Curl GromSearch events on the 2005 Surfing South Africa (SSA) calendar. Although Muizenberg is the most likely option, a mobile venue allows organisers to select the most suitable waves on the Cape peninsula for South Africa’s hottest under 16 surfers to perform this weekend (April 9 & 10)
“With Nikita Robb’s recent victory at Bells Beach in the Rip Curl International Final we are expecting a large number of entries with South African groms eager to qualify for the Grand Final where they stand the chance of winning an all expenses paid trip to compete overseas against top surfers from Brazil, Indonesia, America, New Zealand, Australia and Britain,” commented Head of Rip Curl South Africa Mike Larmont.
Rip Curl GromSearch events are open to under 12, under 14 and under 16 surfers from around the country. Product prizes like Rip Curl tide watches are every surfer’s dream as are the leading edge wetsuits on offer which will come in handy in the cold Western Province surf.
The top two under 16 boys and top two under 16 girls from each of the eight Rip Curl GromSearch events automatically qualify to compete in the Grand Final held in Durban later in the year.
The remaining Rip Curl GromSearch contests take place at East London on 16 April, St Michael’s beach on the KZN south coast on June 4 & 5, Ballito on the Natal north coast on June 11 & 12, Mossel Bay on 2 & 3 July, Point in Jeffreys Bay on 30 & 31 July, Boland on October 8 & 9 and Durban on October 29 & 30.
The invitational Rip Curl GromSearch Grand Final will be held in Durban on November 26 & 27. At this event an all expenses paid ticket to compete at Bells Beach in Easter 2006 will be at stake for the U16 boy and girl winners.
The Cape Town Rip Curl GromSearch competitors briefing takes place at the Rip Curl store in Long Street on Friday, April 8 at 17h00. Attendance is compulsory for all competitors if they wish to receive show bags as well as details of the possible venues. Media are also invited to attend this function.
