2005 Quiksilver / ISA World Junior Surfing Championships

Quiksilver World Junior Surfing Championships

On October 8, 2005, at 2 p.m., the world's most prestigious junior surfing contest, the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, will officially kick off with the colorful "Parade of Nations" followed by the traditional "Sands of the World" ceremony.  Teams from 26 countries including: Argentina, Australia, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Hawaii, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Tahiti, Trinidad and Tobago, United Kingdom, United States and Venezuela will participate in the parade and sand ceremony.  Both ceremonies will be a visual and emotional beginning to the week-long contest.

In the "Parade of Nations," similar to an Olympic opening ceremony, teams will march in alphabetical order by country down the Huntington Beach pier and through the contest area proudly touting their nation's flag and wearing their national colors.  Once assembled, the "Sands of the World" ceremony will commence.  In this ceremony, an International Surfing Association (ISA) tradition created by ISA President Fernando Aguerre for the World Surfing Games in 1996, each team will pour sand brought from their respective country into a specially crafted box in a display of unity and fraternal spirit.  The significance of the ceremony is paramount to the ISA's hopes for a peaceful world and is symbolic of
the spirit of community throughout the sport of surfing worldwide.  The ceremony will also feature welcoming speeches by a host of dignitaries.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), the world's most important sport body, recognizes the ISA as the world governing authority for surfing and waveriding sports.  Inspired by the Olympic spirit, the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships showcases athletes competing on behalf of their country.  The top four finalists will be awarded gold, silver, bronze and copper medals.  Like in the Olympics, cultural identity, team spirit and moments of great personal triumph are hallmarks of the event.
