Quiksilver Pro Japan gears up to 31 August start in Chiba
The Quiksilver Pro in Japan, the seventh event on the ASP World Championship Tour, will be critical for the ratings as Kelly Slater holds a lead over defending world champion Andy Irons. After three wins out of six events so far, Kelly has 5,342 points to Andy’s 4,596. A win is worth 1,200 points.
This is the third year of the Quiksilver Pro Japan, which has a competition window from August 31 to September 7, 2005.
With US$270,000 prizemoney, the event will be based at Hebara Beach, in Katsuura-city, Chiba, and will again be mobile to take advantage of the best surf on offer in the area. Last year we had a typhoon swell which fired up the world-class reefbreak of Malibu.
“In Japan, you have to be ready for anything the ocean can throw at you,” Kelly said. “It’s the first event after a long break and sets the pace going into California and Europe. It is a good time to get on a roll and for the beachbreak/small wave guys to gain some points.”

Surfing is hugely popular in the land of the rising sun. The nation has over 750,000 stoked and wildly enthusiastic surfers and pro competitions have been taking place in Japan since the 70s. The 2003 and 2004 Quiksilver Pros in Japan, won by Andy Irons and CJ Hobgood respectively, were blessed with great waves, incredible surfing and massive turnouts of hyped up fans.
