Surfer Magazine's 2005 Surfer Poll & Video Awards Partner - Surfing America
SURFER Magazine, the industry-leading publication by PRIMEDIA Inc., announced today that it
has added a charity component to this year's prestigious "SURFER Poll and Video Awards Presented by American Suzuki Motor Corporation" by
teaming up with Surfing America in support of the 2005 USA Surf Team.
Renowned faces from the worlds of action sports, music and entertainment
will converge at The Grove in Anaheim, Calif. to honor the best surfers
and surf cinematography while helping the next generation of surfers
achieve their goals.
Throughout the years, the SURFER Poll has come to represent the highest
honor in the surf industry and is the oldest and most anticipated awards
show of the year. This year, companies are invited to purchase special
VIP tables for $1,500 with a portion of the proceeds donated directly to
Surfing America.
Surfing America, an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) charitable organization, is
responsible for selecting and fielding the official USA Surf Team. The
2005 squad will proudly represent the United States as surfers from 30
countries gather in Huntington Beach on October 8-16, 2005 for the
Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships hosted by Surfing
America. In addition to that event, the USA Surf Team members
participate in organized training sessions and programs. Surfing
America's mission is to promote the growth, competitive success and
positive image of surfing in the USA and to provide the best possible
experience for all participants by encouraging, developing, advancing,
and administering the sport-while producing champions.
"Surfing America is honored to be named as beneficiary to this very
important industry event," said Mike Gerard, executive director of
Surfing America. "The USA Surf Team represents the future of American
surfing and we're stoked that SURFER and surf industry leaders are
stepping up their support for young surfers seeking to follow in their
footsteps. We'd like to express our thanks to SURFER for their ongoing
support of Surfing America and the USA Surf Team. This greatly helps to
fuel our building momentum as we prepare for the upcoming ISA World
Junior Surfing Championships in October."
"SURFER Magazine was founded in America and we want to see the sport
flourish and grow in the U.S," says Rick Irons, publisher of SURFER. "We
should have a better contingency of U.S. surfers on the tour and better
amateur teams competing for our national pride. Surfing America is
making that happen and we support their efforts."
Since being recognized as the National Governing Body for Surfing in the
United States by the International Surfing Association (ISA), Surfing
America has helped the USA Surf Team improve a 19th place finish in
March 2004 at the ISA World Games in Ecuador to a silver medal finish at
the 2004 ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Tahiti. Top surfers
are selected to the USA Surf Team from all amateur member organizations
including Eastern Surfing Association (ESA), Hawaii Amateur Surfing
Association (HASA), National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA),
Texas Gulf Surfing Association (TGSA), and Western Surfing Association
(WSA).
The 2005 SURFER Poll and Video Awards Presented by American Suzuki Motor
Corporation will be covered exclusively on www.surfermag.com and
broadcast for the third consecutive year in a one-hour television
special on FUEL TV. Previous years included pre-show and awards
