Quinn Brothers Move Up World Rankings
The youngest of the Quinn brothers Jay secured a career best result on the World Qualifying Series overnight placing 5th at the Rip Curl Boardmasters held at Fistral Beach, Newquay, England. Surfing in the 5 star rated event, Quinn was eliminated in the ‘man on man’ quarterfinals by Australia’s Beau Mitchell. South African Antonio Borteletto was the eventual winner of the event. The 5th placing by Quinn sees him jump 40 places to 120th on the WQS ratings.
Meanwhile, in Japan, Maz Quinn was contesting the Yumeya Pro presented by Billabong. Quinn placed 17th at the 6 star event which secured him the most ratings points so far this year (1125 pts) elevating him six places to 30th on the ratings. Quinn was eliminated in the 5th round of the event by Chris Davidson (Aus) and Nathaniel Curran (USA). Brazil’s Danilo Costa was the eventual winner over Shaun Cansdell (Aus).
Both Jay and Maz move on to France to contest three events and then on to Portugal for the last event of the European leg of the tour. The events and dates are set out below.
Aug 8th – 14th O’Neill Pro – Anglet France (5 star)
Aug 15th – 21st Sooruz Lacanau Pro – Lacanau France (6 star)
Aug 22nd – 28th Rip Curl Pro – Hossegor France (Super Series)
Aug 29th – Sep 4th Buondi Billabong Pro – Ericeira Portugal (6 star)
Lisa Hurunui (Gisborne) was also in action at the Rip Curl Boardmasters where she placed 13th. Her result will elevated her to 26th on the ratings, however with only two events remaining this year Hurunui will not reach the top six rated females in order to qualify for the 2006 World Championship Tour.
Ryan Hawker (Piha) is also in Europe contesting the International Quiksilver King of the Groms event at Capbreton, France. The event caters for U15 surfers from all over the world after qualifying through national series in their respective countries earlier this year. Hawker placed 33rd in the event after narrowly being eliminated in the second round. The event was held under the same rules of the World Championship Tour where surfers compete ‘man on man’. With one year remaining in the U15 event, this years experience will prove valuable for Hawker if he qualifies through the New Zealand series in 2006.
