SAS/Aloha Cornish & Open surf contest set for this weekend
The SAS/Aloha Cornish and Open surf contest will once again take place at the legendary Porthtowan Beach, Cornwall during August. The contest is the UK’s longest running surf competition and is also the greenest, run by environmental non profit making campaigners Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) and sponsored this year by Aloha.
With a £2500 prize purse the UK’s top surfers will revel in Porthtowan’s punchy waves and ensure spectators are greeted by an awesome display of surfing. There will also be lots of family entertainment and a special emphasis on protecting our coastal environment.
Standing alone from other surf contests the SAS/Aloha Cornish and Open has made a special commitment to the environment and this year’s contest includes a tag team surf competition using the very latest in green surfboards crafted from balsa and hemp, reclaimed driftwood trophies for competitors, organic cotton contest t-shirts from Aloha, environmental beach talks from SAS campaigners, recycling advice and collection, beach litter picks, and a ‘green’ puppet show.
Aloha Surf International Managing Director and ex-Cornish resident - Greg McCarry said: “ It’s great to be involved with this event, it has such history and has seen so many UK and international stars compete at various times. It is equally exciting to be involved with the SAS, who have championed the very successful ‘clean beach and water campaign’ over the past 15 years and which has been incredibly beneficial to all UK surfers.”
Surfers Against Sewage Campaigns Director Richard Hardy says: “We’re delighted to have the support of Aloha in making this event Europe’s Greenest Surf Contest. The Cornish and Open has a great history and one that SAS is very proud of. We hope that as well as a great surf contest people will also take away some environment saving tips to ensure our wonderful beaches remain pristine”.
Co Sponsors the Blue Bar will also be hosting the Official Contest Party as an SAS evening fundraiser on Saturday 13th August with live band Three Minute Warning playing. The Cornish and Open is also supported by Pure Blue Water, Redstripe, Carve, Surfgirl, Threesixty, & Surfersvillage.
