Ryan Payne wins the 2005 O'Neill Cold Water Classic

Ryan Payne of Jeffrey's Bay followed up his perfect 10 point tube ride at 365 Reef on Day One of the 2005 O'Neill Cold Water Classic  with his first ever ASP Pro Surf Tour victory in the Final of the Open Men's Division in 6 to 8 foot Outer Kom surf on Sunday afternoon (July 31).

Payne had never even reached a PST final prior to Sunday and last won a major event when he was 16 years old so this was a special weekend for the Eastern Province surfer. Not only did he bank the R4000 open winner prizepurse but also earned R500 for the best tube ride of the event. The victory meant that he added 750 rating points to his 2005 ASP Africa PST tally.

SA Champion Shane Thorne was second and fellow Durban surfer Simon Nicholson came third. Daniel Beatty of Kommetjie was fourth in a final that had all four surfers matching each other wave for wave during 25 action packed minutes.

At the award ceremony the new Cold Water Classic Open champion declared "I am not used to centre stage.  I haven't been up here since I was was Under 16" adding "I want to dedicate this win to my good friend Enzo Louis Daniels who died a couple of weeks ago. I also want to thank everyone who has supported me, all my friends and my lazy brother."

Although only finishing fourth in the final, Beatty was the standout local surfer in the Open Division  and in the opinion of the Zig Zag crew at the event was a deserving winner of R1000 and the unique hand grenade shaped Zig Zag Blow Up Award trophy.

Local big wave charger and a late entry into the event Andrew Preen, took honours in the Masters Final edging out Southern Natal charger Gary van Wieringen former SA Team captain Lyle Bottcher of Durban and Andrew Banks of Port Edward on the KZN South Coast. At the prizegiving Preen complimented the organisers on their choice of venues for both days of competition saying " they had the guts to hold the contest in great surf'.

The Cold Water Classic is the only event on the annual Pro Surf Tour that features a Masters division for surfers older than 30 and is one of two ASP Africa Pro Surf Tour contests to be held in the Cape Peninsula. . Seventeen "over 30's" entered the 2005 event. The Top Grom Award was made to Matthew Bromley who at the tender age of 13 made it through to round three of the Open Division, Ryan Payne won the Best Tube ride award for his perfect 10 on the first day of competition and Lyle Bottcher took home R500 for the Highest Scoring wave of the event.

Over 70 surfers from all corners of south Africa competed in the 2A rated event which offered a total of R15000 in prizemoney to the semi finalists and finalists in the two divisions.

The event uses a mobile venue which means that the best surf on each day of competition can be selected for the contestants. The last time a major surf contest was held at 365 reef in the Soetwater reserve was during the SA Championships in 2000 with Outer Kom still remembered as the venue where the final of the 1984 Spur Surfabout was held.
