Cape Town to host second leg of Roxy Surf Jam series

Cape Town hosts the second leg of the national Roxy Surf Jam series for junior girls aged 20 and younger this coming weekend when more than 50 local and visiting aspiring surf stars will take to the waves at Muizenberg.

The line-up is headed by national team member Tarryn Chudleigh (Kommetjie), who will contest both the Under 16 and Pro Junior (U20) divisions, and features a host of age group stars such as Durban’s Sarah Baum, Bianca Buitendag from Victoria Bay, Tanika Hoffman (Kirstenhof), Sarah Nicholson (Kommetjie) and Australian visitor Lindsay Noyes.

Created to attract newcomers to competitive surfing from the fast growing ranks of female surfers around the coastline of the country, for many of whom it will be their first contest, the Roxy Surf Jam events also provide additional experience for regular competitors with points earned in the U20 division counting towards the crowning of the annual Pro Surf Tour (PST) girls Pro Junior champion.

The Cape Town stop on the series also offers a total of R8 000 in prize-money that is split amongst the top four finishers in each of the Under 14, U16, U18 and Pro Junior divisions, along with additional prizes for the competitor performing the Most Radical Manoeuvre in each age category.

Although Chudleigh will be the favourite in her familiar surf of Muizenberg, she faces tough opposition for the sought after titles, ratings points and prize-money from Noyes and Nicholson in the U20’s and from Somerset West’s Lisa Mace and Chantelle Rautenbach (Melkbosstrand) in the U16’s.

Roxy Louw (Durbanville) and Megan Kelly (Tableview) look the pick of the U18’s while the biggest field contests the U14 category where Baum, Buitendag and Heidi Palmboom (Bluff, KZN) will take on talented locals in Hoffman and Danielle Johnson (Muizenberg).

Scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, July 23 & 24, the event is based at Muizenberg but is mobile and can be moved to one of the many other venues on the Cape Peninsula should conditions dictate. Contact the Western Province Surfing (WPS) Info Line on 08 22 33 4 001 to confirm the venue on each day.

The Roxy Surf Jam Series is proudly supported by Saltwater Girl, Mentos and Roxy Sunnies. The series is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa (SSA) while the U20 category is also accredited by ASP Africa with the results of that division counting towards the Pro Surf Tour (PST) girls Pro Junior title for 2005.

The grand finale of the Roxy Surf Jam Series will take place at New Pier in Durban, regarded as the best surfing venue on the Golden Mile beachfront, on the weekend 15 & 16 October where the prize-money in each division is doubled, taking the total at stake to R16 000.
