Beginners Board - AGAIN

HI,

SOrry for posting this topic again but I have been investigating a board for myself. Had a couple of lessons am able to stand, slight bit of turning, but I feel now is the time to take the plunge & buy my own board.

I am interested on reading anybodys view on a "Renegade Board" - I personally have never heard of them but the guy in the Surf SHop was trying to sell me one, saying they are better than BIC & NSP? I did a google & can find nothing about these boards? Has anybody else heard of them, if so what are your views?

I have been swaying towards a 7" 2/ 7" 6 BIC Minimal only because that is the board nearly everybody learns on or suggests?

im just guessing here but renegade boards sound as if they are just the same as bics/nsps - usually the case when you can find zero info on a board

they are good boards by a good shaper, perfect shape for beginner, lighter than BIC or NSP although not as strong. my dads got one, very nice board! the boards are sold by the man him self, which means that you won't get ripped off. anything else?

ok thanks for the input but I don't think i'm gonna go with the Roger Cooper - I feel i'd rather pick up the board in the shop & feel the weight, detail etc etc

So I've moved on now from BIC & NSP - what about a Cortez??

I really fancied a roger cooper, but i thought i'd just break it being a leaner, so i bought an NSP and will, when i get better buy a roger cooper then.They do look awesome, the Orange one looks sweeeet.

Feel confident in buying from Roger Cooper guys!

I purchased two boards from him in the last 9 months. First a 7'6 minimal via ebay and then a few months later a 6' retro fish by contacting him directly. I collected the boards on both occassions and was given some excellent advice from Roger.
If you are considering ebay, contact Roger by sending him an email before bidding to confirm the boards suitability.

As for the boards - they are awesome! As already mentioned they indeed are lighter and considerably faster and more responsive than a Bic/Nsp's - tried/owned them both. Durability is not an issue if you don't bang them around as majority of surfboard damage occurs outside water.

I really didn't like the Bic mini-mals.
Personally i would stay clear of them and NSP.
The cortez is also a pretty poor board in my opinion.
If push came to shove i would choose a custom board.

Are bic and nsp brands? I just see those mentioned so much on here and I'm now wondering whether they're terms for types of boards

Bic and NSP are brands.

They do moulded plastic popout boards that are (a)tough and (b) hated by most surfers. They tend to be heavy and not that great.

But they aer floaty and indestructable and cheap so are popular with learners.

A proper hand shaped foam/glassed board is a lot mroe delicate.

Theres also tufflight/surftec boards which are sort of in between, very light and very strong, machine made but shaped by some greats, opinion is split on these but they can be for some great boards.

2scoops (and for that matter, all the other new surfers who ask pretty much the same question) - no offence, etc - but the only person who can choose your board is YOU!

OK - ask if x,y or z make is any good (my 2p - a pop-out is a pop-out is a pop-out - cheap, heavy, always come out better in a board fight, hence disliked HUGELY by owners of far more expensive, but less hard, custom boards!!) - and at a push ask what sort of board is better to learn on (although the topic has been done to death - not just on here) - but the final decision is yours alone.

Do the whole touchy, feely thing - better still, try before you buy (at least something the same sort of size, shape and weight) - then decide what YOU think suits YOU better.

It's just my personal opinion, but the MOST IMPORTANT thing about a board is whether it suits YOU and the way you ride. Forget the name on it, forget the paintjob, forget whether it's the latest fashion - if you can get the most enjoyment out of it, then it's right ...... if you're still unsure, then speak to a local shaper and get them to make you a board...........

I've just bought my first board as it was getting silly hiring all the time. looked around quite a bit and even though i loved the designs of the NSPs and Bics i hadnt heard anything amazing about them. In the end i went for a roger cooper. luckily he is only half an hour from where i live so we went down and had a chat. he was a really nice guy and can usually make your board to your own specs, also got to make my own design for it, with a bit of theirs. picking it up week friday so am well excited!!!

Thanks for all the posts - they've been inspiring me..

I've been trawling the paper for local send hand boards & have found a

circle one 7" 6 - one damaged fin, leash, & wax for £200
Apparently its oonly been in the water once...

I'm trying to barter her down to £150 as its gonna cost around £50 for a bag & fins are about £40..so it might be just as cheap to buy a package deal from a surf shop..

I'll keep you posted when I've finally made the leap of faith & bought a board

Please feel free to keep posting suggestions however
